Introduction
Let’s be honest: Nothing comes easy when it comes to getting ready for IPMAT 2025. If you are gunning for a five year Integrated Program in Management (IPM) so targeting, then there’s need for more than book brains; there’s need for strategy. One of the greatest game changers in this exam is your Aptitude Test Score, your ATS. What is this indefinable figure, and how is it even quantified? Let’s break it down.
Understanding ATS (Aptitude Test Score)
The ATS, in fact, is your performance score which decides whether you are qualified to proceed to the next round (usually, personal interview—PI) or not. Unlike your raw scores which simply add your number of correct and incorrect answers, the ATS will provide you with a more realistic comparison because it takes into account the performance of other applicants.
Importance of ATS in IPMAT 2025
2025 will be no different as your ATS will yet again be hugely instrumental in determining if that golden interview call comes from the IIMs – Indore, Ranchi or Rohtak. If you believe you did well on the test, but your ATS doesn’t agree with you – you may fail to cut it. That’s why knowing it is so important.
Sections Considered for ATS Calculation
The IPMAT exam usually carries with it two major parts:
Quantitative Ability (QA)
You know that this section will test your math skills – algebra, arithmetic, data interpretation and so on.
Verbal Ability (VA)
Your knowledge of English is here measured- vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, etc.
Your ATS is directly impacted by your performance in every section of these.
Raw Score vs ATS
Let’s clarify this upfront:
Raw Score
This is the plain score that comes with marking:
- +4 for every correct answer
- -1 for every wrong one
ATS
Here’s where it gets spicy. The ATS takes the highest and the lowest scores in the test, and normalizes your score to them. It’s a grading on a curve.
Calculation Mechanism
The formula usually used looks something like this:
ATS = 25 *(Your Sectional Score – Minimum Score) / (Maximum Score – Minimum Score)
Each section’s ATS is then compiled to create the overall ATS.
How ATS is Calculated: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Calculate Raw Score
Use the marking scheme: +4 for correct, -1 for wrong.
Step 2: Find Min and Max Scores
These are from actual results – lowest and highest scores achieved by the testers across all testers.
Step 3: Normalize Your Score
Use the formula to each section.
Step 4: Final ATS
Add sectional ATS to give your final Aptitude Test Score.
Example of ATS Calculation
- Your raw score: 80
- Max score: 120
- Min score: 20
Apply the formula:
(80-20)/(120-20) = 60/100 = 0.6
Using comparable reasoning for VA and scoring 0.7 there then your weighted ATS may be something like –
Final ATS = 0.6+ 0.7)/2 = 0.65 or 65%
This will then be combined with other measurements, to determine your choice.
ATS Weightage in Final Selection
IIM Indore has the selection split up this way:
- 65% weightage to ATS
- 35% to the Personal Interview
In other words, yes – your ATS is not just a figure; it’s two out of three of your chances of getting into the IPM program.
Impact of ATS on Cut-offs
Many students make a lot of confusion between cut-off and ATS. They’re not the same.
- Cut-off is the minimum level scored
- ATS is your normalized performance.
- If your ATS is below cut off, you won’t even get shortlisted. Yet if you have a decent looking raw score despite tough competition a bad ATS can deteriorate your chances.
Common Mistakes While Estimating ATS
The predictions based on nothing but raw scores had followed.
- Ignoring section-wise balance
- Failure to account for variability of scores from year to year
- Don’t fall into these traps. Use appropriate calculators and await the official data instead of propelling to conclusions.
Tips to Maximize ATS
- Never mind section one, nail section two.
- Focus on accuracy over attempts
- Use mock tests to create conditions of an exam.
- Analyze previous year trends
ATS Variation Across IIMs
IIMs do not all use the same formula. For example:
IIM Indore: 65% ATS + 35% PI
IIM Rohtak and IIM Ranchi might, though, differ in their perception of the ATS.
- Always check the specific IIMs admission criteria.
